![]() ![]() We are the company with the largest team of developers who work solely and completely on Java. So, yeah, we've been doing Java a long time. ![]() So, we moved from just having that one to also doing our Zulu JDK, which is just a straight build, supported build of open JDK, and then from that, to actually providing SaaS services, which we're bringing to market today. And over the years, we have moved from doing hardware to just doing software, and then recently from just doing software, just doing one JVN, which used to be called Zing, most people who know us from before, remember it as Zing, and was rebranded to Azul platform prime. We started out building service, specialized servers for financial institutions who wanted really low latency, and we would actually ship those servers and install them with our own version of Java on them. We actually started out building appliances. ![]() I've been here at Azul a couple of years now, Azul is actually a long and storied company. So, I'm the Senior Director of Product Management here for Azul, and I take care of our Azul platform prime, which is our hyper-optimized build of open JDK. But maybe give us some background on what you do at Azul, what Azul does, and how you got there. So, John, you're the Senior Director for Product Management at Azul, and the best way I can describe Azul for people that haven't heard of you, just like a focused Java optimization shop, right? Full service you have services and support, you have product including your own JDM, you have SaaS tools, and just things like that. Start monitoring your applications with a free trial and Datadog will send you a free t-shirt. See which services or calls are generating errors or contributing to overall latency, so you can troubleshoot faster or identify opportunities for performance optimization. Datadog's distributed tracing and APM generates detailed flame graphs from real requests, enabling you to visualize how requests propagate through your distributed infrastructure. With infrastructure monitoring, distributed tracing, and now logging, Datadog provides end-to-end visibility into the health and performance of modern applications. Today's episode of Software Engineering Daily is sponsored by Datadog. All right, John Cicarelli, welcome to Software Engineering Daily. ![]() We also discussed the different use cases like the financial sector and other infrastructure areas like Cassandra and Kafka. He joins the show to discuss ASL's optimization of Open JDK, specifically the JIT compiler and the garbage collector. John Cicarelli is the senior director of product management at ASL Systems, responsible for ASL platform prime, which is their hyper-optimized build of Open JDK. As well as a company that specializes in Java for the enterprise, it has the largest Java engineering team after Oracle. While you can use the Open JDK, it comes with various issues like security vulnerabilities and compliance. The Java Virtual Machine is an abstract machine that makes it possible for you to write Java code once and run it across multiple devices and operating system types. He runs a consulting company where he assists clients with DynamoDB data modeling, serverless architectures, and General AWS usage. Alex is the author of the DynamoDB book, The Comprehensive Guide to Data Modeling with DynamoDB, as well as the DynamoDB Guide, a free guided introduction to DynamoDB. ![]()
